In the Shadow of the Moon’s Cleopatra Coleman Talks Sci-Fi, Biracial Identity and Finding Her Zen

While talking to actress Cleopatra Coleman, I learn a shocking truth: There are dead zones that can extend across whole communities in Los Angeles and that are impervious to whatever magic it is that makes cellphones work. And Coleman seems to be living in one of those dead zones now.

If this were the set-up to a sci-fi movie, it would probably be right up Coleman’s alley, but it’s just a case of poor reception. I’m listening about as hard as a person can, but I might as well be talking to a ghost calling from a subway pay phone circa 1983. I’m both talking to her and not.

PinkCherry has fun with the joy of sex

Sex may sell, but that doesn’t mean selling sex toys isn’t complicated. And when it’s three giant billboards doing the selling, it’s easier to sell happiness instead.

That’s idea behind online adult store PinkChery’s latest OOH campaign, created by Toronto agency The Local Collective. Comprised of playful, suggestive statements, it is about helping people start the year off with some positivity and intrigue, while helping to solidify a consistent visual identity for a brand many Canadians still have low awareness of.

How to Wear a Sweater Vest: 7 Stylish Ways to Pull Off the Endlessly Versatile Knit

The humble sweater vest has had one hell of a decade. In the early 2010s, the knitwear staple was all but left for dead, the sort of fuddy-duddy sartorial relic only your grandpa could love. And then a funny thing happened: Dressing like your grandpa became the coolest thing in menswear. Suddenly those sleeveless castaways were back at the center of the conversation, popping up on the backs of inventive dressers like Tyler, the Creator and in the collections of vibey labels like Supreme and Our...

I Tried Seasonal Color Analysis, the '80s Fashion Trend Taking Over TikTok

This Saturday, I’m getting married in my backyard. I’ve spent the last few months trying to find the perfect suit. That hasn’t, as you might expect, involved consulting with a cadre of aged Italian tailors or delving deep into the darkest corners of r/MaleFashionAdvice. Instead, it’s led me on a journey to discover my color season. In 1973, Carole Jackson published Color Me Beautiful, her seminal work on the subject of seasonal color analysis. The book—which has sold more than 13 million copies...

What Can Drag Superstar Priyanka Teach Us About Entrepreneurship?

As any disciple of RuPaul’s Drag Race will tell you, nothing is ever guaranteed. RuPaul, the entertainment scion and drag queen widely credited for ushering drag culture into the mainstream, likes to keep her queens on their toes. The show, which is now in its 13th season and has launched a growing list of international franchises, is the ultimate test of a drag queen’s performance abilities. It is a gauntlet that ultimately crowns an individual each season for having the most—as RuPaul puts it—...

This lawyer has DJed at some of Toronto’s hottest nightclubs

A few years later, Arman discovered house and techno, EDM subgenres that generally shun the euphoric melodies of trance in favour of propulsive basslines. He became a die-hard fan. He even started to produce his own tracks, but he wasn’t satisfied with the product. His full potential as a musician remained untapped. That changed in 2015. As an associate on Bay Street, Arman started to attend live shows, where hordes of bodies danced in unison. He came to a powerful conclusion: “I wanted to be the...

How Gillian Hnatiw became a top advocate for survivors of sexual misconduct

After law school, Hnatiw launched her career at Lerners LLP as an articling student, before becoming an associate and then a partner. “I never saw myself as a Bay Street type,” she says, “so I was surprised I liked it there.” As she built a broad civil litigation practice, she continued to seek out clients who lacked a clear path to justice. Today, she is one of the country’s leading experts on sexual misconduct and violence, as well as gender-based discrimination. In these areas of law, survivo...

Gugu Mbatha-Raw on Privilege, the Fear of Unemployment & the Ethics of Acting - FASHION Magazine

By the time I arrive at the restaurant on the 44th floor of a downtown-Toronto hotel, Gugu Mbatha-Raw is already waiting at the table, looking like a friend you haven’t seen since high school—familiar and welcoming but not entirely without mystery. She’s dressed casually but professionally—a cardigan may or may not be involved—and her hair is pulled back.Actually, you know what it is? She looks like a Hollywood casting director’s version of a friend you haven’t seen since high school, which is t...

Beanie Feldstein of 'Booksmart' and 'How to Build a Girl' on Being "Built Happy," Musicals and (of Course) Llamas - FASHION Magazine

We’re on the patio at one of Beanie Feldstein’s favourite brunch spots. It feels transplanted from Los Angeles—which is to say there is a shocking dearth of deep-fried dishes. But the mechanical roar and shudder from a nearby construction crew, the buildings and the presence of Beanie* herself place us very clearly in New York. Chelsea, to be exact. And when in Chelsea with an impossibly charming actress well on her way to attaining her dream career, you talk about llamas.* Author’s note: It’s j...

Chris Evans Is Tired of Feeling Inauthentic

Chris Evans has a lot on his mind. The Oscars are in less than a week, and he’ll need to look so good on the red carpet that people don’t notice how uncomfortable that whole situation makes him. He just got back from a fitting with his stylist. The tux he’ll end up wearing, a royal blue take on a classic, works nicely. Now he’s looking at a night filled with some much-needed house cleaning, because as he puts it, “it’s getting pretty gross.” But, mostly, he’s thinking about America.“Lately all I’...
